Glencree is a partner in a European Union Project, Euromed III, to support active citizenship in Israel / Palestine and is looking to recruit four Irish participants to be involved in the project. The project will take place between 10 and 21 January 2009 in Jerusalem and will bring together four groups of four people between the ages 20 and 25, each with a group leader. The groups will come from The Republic of Ireland, Northern Ireland, Palestine and Israel and will participate in workshops and other activities to exchange ideas, experience and future hopes. The aim of the project is to develop an understanding of the Palestine/Israel conflict and explore ways that young people could play a more active role in moving forward. We hope that the group from the Republic of Ireland will be able to make a contribution to this and bring something useful back. There will be no continued funding after the trip to Jerusalem, though we would like to stay connected with the group in any activities they develop.
All expenses for the exchange will be covered by project funding including flights, accommodation and meals, though the participants will need to bring some pocket money. An interest in the region and commitment to the project are the main requirements and details of other criteria are listed below. In Jerusalem participants will be actively engaged in a process of dialogue, sharing and learning through workshops and other activities and it will be a demanding but very engaging process.
The following are the requirements for participants to be considered for the exchange
- An Irish passport holder between the age of 20 and 25 available to travel and commit to participate in Jerusalem between 10 – 21 January 2009
- An interest in Palestine/Israel and open to learn more about the current situation there
- Some intercultural group experience and a willingness to engage with people from different social and cultural backgrounds
- Prepared to be involved in follow up activities for active citizenship in Ireland defined by the group during the project
- Ability to manage spending time in a diverse group and committing to the travel and daily schedule
- Available to attend a one-day, pre-departure meeting/briefing/workshop in Glencree.
