German Remembrance Day
German Remembrance Day is commemorated every year at the German Military Cemetery at Glencree, County Wicklow.
In 2006, German Remembrance Day took place on the 19th of November. An ecumenical service was lead by Lutheran Pastors Joachim and Corinna Diestelkamp at St. Kevin's Church and a wreath-laying ceremony at the German Military Cemetery by the Ambassador of Germany, Christian Pauls.
The commemoration was followed by a seminar on “The Role of the Military in Peacebuilding” hosted by the Glencree Centre for Peace and Reconciliation. Speakers were Lieutenant Colonel Andreas Unkelbach, the Assistant Air Attaché at the German Embassy in London, Colonel Tom Behan or the Irish Defence Forces, and Mr. Ian White, Director of the Political and International Programmes at Glencree. The seminar was chaired by Mr. Blakely McNally, Chairman of the Ballybeen Improvement Group, Northern Ireland.
