Haiti Benefit Gig – 8pm, 3 February at Taylors Threerock

We are all aware of the disaster that has befallen Haiti and that predictions are that up to 200,000 people have died, many others have been injured, and that everyone in the country has been effected in some way. Glencree have been involved in a Peace Building Partnership with Concern Worldwide in Haiti since 2005. Our work is focused in the two main slums of Martissant which has a population of around 300-350,000 people as well as St Martin with around 100,000 - 120,000 people. Our work was certainly producing results with a reduction in violence in these communities of up to 80%, and a growing national interest which was based on inclusive dialogue.

Foreign interest in Haiti had grown and with a reduction in violence, growing economic investment and development, and increasing effectiveness of state institutions, the future was beginning to look bright for what some call a "failed state".

That was until the earthquake.

As part of our programme, Glencree hosted three volunteers from the communities in which we work who each stayed with us for one year. Normil, his wife, and his baby son are okay although their home is destroyed. Eslin is in Ireland and, while he is okay, communications difficulties mean that he has no information on his immediate family. Marjory, the third long term volunteer to have served at Glencree, is still unaccounted for. Apart from our three long term volunteers, we have four hundred people, mainly from the slums but representing a cross section of society, directly involved in peace building. Many of these have died in the quake leaving parents and children in those communities struggling for their lives.

Glencree has established a Haiti Emergency Fund to raise funds to assist the people in the slums of Martissant and St Martin put their communities and their lives together again.

Glencree invites you to consider making a donation to this fund and thanks to those in governance positions within the organization, the fund as it opened has already got more than €1,000 in it. As well as making a donation, some of you may wish to consider hosting an event such as a dinner party, coffee morning, or quiz where additional funds can be raised. To help our friends in Haiti and to make a donation please see details below:

the Allied Irish Bank (AIB) is 100\101 Grafton Street, Dublin 2
the account Name is Haiti Disaster Fund
the NSC (National Sort Code) is 931047
and the Account number is 15941900.

Please note that Glencree will be forwarding 100% of any money received for the Haiti Disaster Fund, directly to Concern Worldwide for use in the rescue efforts in Haiti.

Please put your first and last name in the 'receiver message' area and we can acknowledge your contribution and arrange for a tax receipt to be sent to you.

For international money transfers, I have found it is best to 'send' the money in euros, otherwise AIB may charge to accept and exchange the currency.

Trish Anderson (01 2829711)  has agreed to provide information to anyone who wants it, but in the meanwhile, let us hope and pray that the death toll stops rising.

Thank you,

Glencree Friends of Haiti.
